The goal of Hamilton Southeastern Schools is to meet every child where they are no matter their abilities or skills. Our program helps support that goal by helping students build their "Foundation of Characteristics Unique to Success" or FOCUS. The program is available to HSE students in grades K-12 who are identified by their home school and placement is determined by the case conference committee.
We offer students a place to experience success academically and behaviorally by teaching them the skills needed to cope with various obstacles in their lives. Students enrolled in FOCUS follow the same academic curriculum and requirements for their grade level. We aim to have the students transfer back to their home school and graduate with their peers.
A typical day at FOCUS includes practicing mindfulness, where students pause to reflect on where they are and what they are doing, without becoming overly reactive or overwhelmed. Students enjoy time throughout the week to explore their interests and hobbies. We have several clubs including art, cooking, basketball, chess, and upcycling. Older students will also work alongside younger students during the day – a partnership beneficial to both parties.
