6th Graders Discuss Development of 96th Street / Allisonville Rd with City of Fishers

While studying the themes of geography and environmental impact, Emily Stout was looking for a real-world example to enrich the learning experience for her sixth-grade students at Riverside Intermediate School. Emily found a guest speaking opportunity involving the future development of the 96th Street and Allisonville Road intersection. Emily was able to connect with Megan Baumgartner, the Director of Economic Development for the City of Fishers.

Megan visited and spent forty-five minutes with each class describing the history of the site and the challenges associated with it that include nearby wastewater treatment plants and a graveyard. Megan was impressed by the students’ engagement in the topic. “The students were immediately interested in how to make the site work as it currently stands…They asked really insightful questions about sustainability and keeping trees in the area” she said.

Emily was also excited about her students’ reaction to the project. “It was wonderful to see my students all in. They asked excellent questions and it created an opportunity for them to get involved in something that directly impacts the city in which they live.”

After Megan’s visit, students used the next week to research and create a proposal for development of the site that they presented to their class. According to Emily, “It truly was a great experience, and I am hoping to utilize community organizations in my classroom in the future!”

Community involvement does not just benefit teachers and students. Megan believes that all organizations can gain from participating in the schools. “It helps you see your work through a different lens. The kids were so engaged and excited! I fed off of their excitement to come up with ideas.”
