Pictures of Delaney
6th Grade SCI Student to Present at the Hands and Voices National Conference in DC

August 26, 2019

Delaney Allgeier is an 11 year old student at Sand Creek Intermediate School. She is single sided deaf.

In Indiana approx. 42% of babies identified with hearing loss have a unilateral loss. And it has been recognized that many of these children struggle academically and socially.

Delaney decided to apply to present her journey at the Hands & Voices National Conference in Washington DC this September.  Her family felt that they could help other families by sharing her story - the success and the struggles. It is especially exciting because this year’s conference takes place at Gallaudet University.  "Gallaudet University, the world's only university in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students, was founded in 1864 by an Act of Congress (its Charter), which was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln.”

It is an honor that Delaney’s presentation was chosen because only 20% of the proposals were approved, and this presentation will move awareness and research forward regarding the impact of unilateral hearing loss on children.

Delaney will be joined in this presentation by her audiologist, Dr. Suzanne Foley, her teacher of the deaf, Kim Pelton, her parent guide, Lisa Kovacs and her parents.

This panel will take you thought the journey of a single sided deaf child; from failing the newborn hearing screen to completion of elementary school. The presentation will provide strategies that were triumphant at home and in social situations as well as information on successful educational advocacy & classroom management. This panel will also cover some of the struggles and missteps along this journey.
