1. How long will HSE Schools be closed?
On Thursday, April 3, Governor Eric Holcomb and State Superintendent Jennifer McCormick announced all schools will remain closed through the end of the school year. Instruction will continue via eLearning through Thursday, May 21 for students.
 
2. How will I receive communication and updates from HSE Schools?
All school-related information will be communicated using the district’s standard channels of communication, including phone calls, emails, text messages and the HSE Schools website. Parents, guardians and staff should verify that their phone numbers and email addresses are correct in Skyward to ensure notifications are received.
 
3. What is the COVID-19 (Coronavirus)?
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) virus, and we are learning more about it every day. There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. Symptoms include: cough, fever and shortness of breath. In rare cases, COVID-19 can lead to severe respiratory problems, kidney failure or death.
 
4. What can I do to help prevent illness?
The most important thing you can do is remain calm, prepared, and informed. It also is important to take standard illness prevention tips. The same steps you take to reduce the spread of flu or other respiratory illnesses are key tools for reducing the spread of coronavirus.
 
5. How the public can help:
  • Stay home when you are sick. The CDC recommends that you remain home until you are “fever free” for at least 24 hours.
  • Seek medical attention if you are experiencing symptoms that cause concern.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, or by coughing into the inside of your elbow. Throw any used tissues away in trash.
  • Avoid touching eyes, mouth and nose with unwashed hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in and around your home.

6. How do I explain COVID-19 to my family?
Don’t be afraid to discuss COVID-19 with your children, but let them guide the conversation. It is important to provide facts without promoting a high level of stress. Remind your children that the adults are working to address this concern and give them actions they can take to protect themselves.
  • Early elementary school children need brief, simple information that should balance COVID-19 facts with appropriate reassurances that their schools and homes are safe and the adults are there to help keep them healthy. Give simple examples of the steps people take every day to stop germs and stay healthy, such as washing hands. Use language such as “adults are working hard to keep you safe.”
  • Upper elementary and intermediate school children will be more vocal in asking questions about whether they truly are safe and what will happen if COVID-19 comes to their school or community. They may need assistance separating reality from rumor and fantasy. Discuss efforts of school and community leaders to prevent germs from spreading.
  • Junior high school and high school children are able to discuss the issue in a more in-depth (adult-like) fashion and can be referred directly to appropriate sources of COVID-19 facts. Provide honest, accurate, and factual information about the current status of COVID-19. Having such knowledge can help them feel a sense of control.
7. Will mental health support be available to students while schools are closed?
If your student is currently a client of Community Health Network, please communicate with the therapist on times to meet during this closure.If your student is not assigned a therapist through Community Health Network, but needs support while schools are closed, please email your school counselor.

8. How will my student receive his/her class assignments?
Students will receive online instructional content provided by their teachers and will be posted to Canvas no later than 9 a.m. on eLearning days. The lessons will be interactive and relate to the curriculum for the specific class. Students will have access to their teachers via email or another method communicated by the teacher.
 
  • For grades K-4, eLearning will be communicated in the eLearning section of the teacher’s Canvas course.
  • For grades 5-12, eLearning will be communicated via the announcement section in Canvas.
As a general guideline, eLearning assignments/activities should take between 20-30 minutes per class/content area. At the K-4 level where assignments/activities blend across multiple content areas, teachers will communicate about how long the assignment/activity should take to complete. 9. What is the schedule for eLearning for students?
HSE Schools will hold eLearning for students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Assignment given during this three-day period are due the following Monday by noon. Mondays and Fridays of eLearning weeks are considered ‘teacher planning’ days. eLearning will not be held the week of March 30 or April 6 (Spring Break). Attendance will be taken by students logging into Canvas each eLearning day.

10. What if my student doesn’t have home Wi-Fi access?
NEW - You may access the HSE network via our dedicated outdoor Wi-Fi in the main parking lots of Durbin Elementary (recently added), New Britton Elementary School, Geist Elementary School, and in the shared parking lot of Sand Creek Elementary School and Sand Creek Intermediate School. Click here for maps and a full list of local service providers that are offering discounts and/or specials for families in need of Wi-Fi.
 
In addition, free public Wi-fi access is available in the parking lots of the Hamilton East Public Libraries in Fishers and Noblesville. Details can be found here. To access the 24/7 parking lot Wi-Fi, please look for the network name: HEPLpublicwifi. A password isn’t required for connection.

11. Is there any flexibility on eLearning deadlines for families with parents who continue to have to work during this school closure?  
Families who need an exception should contact their student’s teacher. 
 
12. What can I do if my student is really struggling with eLearning material? 
If a student is struggling, please contact your student’s teacher to discuss how additional support can be provided. 
 
13. What if my student’s rental device (iPad or laptop) is not working properly while schools are closed?
Families should contact the HSE Helpdesk at 317.594.4110 or email helpdesk@hse.k12.in.us for assistance.
 
14. How are students being graded for the Fourth Quarter?  
Pre-K:
  • No changes will be made to student’s report cards
  • Teachers are continuing to teach and evaluate essential Semester 2 skills and standards.
  • Essential Standards will be marked with an S, P or N.
  • Teachers may provide narrative comments on skills and standards to indicate where students may need more support.
  • Some skills will not be assessed as instruction for those skill areas may have been more difficult to deliver and/or assess through eLearning.
  • Some skills may not be mastered this quarter and will remain marked as a P due to difficulty to determine mastery of the skill via eLearning assignments.
Grades K-2:
  • No changes will be made to student’s report cards. 
  • Teachers are continuing to teach and evaluate essential Q4 skills and standards.
  • Essential standards will be marked with an S, P or N.
  • Teachers may provide narrative comments on skills and standards to indicate where students may need more support.

  • Some skills may not be mastered this quarter and will remain marked as a 2 due to difficulty to determine mastery of the skill via eLearning assignments.
Related Arts K-6:  
  • Teachers will continue to teach and evaluate essential Q4 skills and standards.
  • An overall semester grade will be not be assigned.
Grades 7-8:
  • No final exams will be given for Semester 2.
  • Q3/Q4 grade distribution will change from a 50/50 split to a cumulative grade for the entire semester.
  • Grading will continue to take place as it has in the past.
Grades 9-12:
  • No final exams will be given for Semester 2.
  • Q3/Q4 is a cumulative grade for the entire semester. 
  • Grading will continue to take place as it has in the past. 
15. Will students have to make-up school days during the summer? 
eLearning days have been utilized to meet the new 160 day requirement set by the Indiana Department of Education for the 2019-20 school year, so there would not be a need to hold make-up days during the summer. 
 
16. My student was scheduled to take ILEARN-3, IREAD, ISTEP+, I AM, ISPROUT and/or WIDA Screener. Will those tests be rescheduled upon student’s return?
The Indiana Department of Education has canceled all state-required assessments for the 2019-20 school year.
 
17. My student is enrolled in AP classes. How will AP exams be conducted? Will student still receive credit for these courses?
According to College Board, traditional face-to-face AP exam administrations will not take place for the 2019-2020 academic year, instead  students can take a 45-minute online exam at home. There will be two different testing dates for each AP subject. Students will be able to take these streamlined exams on any device they have access to which includes, computer, tablet or smartphone. Taking a photo of handwritten work will also be an option.

Beginning on Wednesday, March 25, students can attend free, live AP review courses, delivered by AP teachers from across the country. These courses:
  • Are optional, mobile-friendly, and can be used alongside any work your teacher may give you.
  • Will be available on-demand, so you can access them any time.
  • Will focus on reviewing the skills and concepts from the first 75% of the course. There will also be some supplementary lessons covering the final 25% of the course.

18. My student was assigned an internship. Are they required to fulfill their internship hours while school is closed?
Students were involved in internship experiences will immediately suspend their involvement while schools are not in session.
 
19. How are the needs of students that receive extra support through Special Services being addressed? 
Students who receive extra support through an IEP should still be receiving that extra support, however it may look different under the current circumstances. If you believe your student is not receiving appropriate support, contact your student’s TOR (Teacher of Record) to address the situation. 
 
20. What is the timeline for students who have been referred for testing?
At this time, we have asked families to delay and/or pause on the current timelines for testing until school resumes.
 
21. My student was scheduled for their annual case review and/or entrance conference. Will those meetings still take place as planned?
TOR or Teachers of Record are currently scheduling virtual annual case reviews and/or entrance conferences with families and staff.
 
22. How are transition case conferences for students being handled while schools are closed?   
The Department of Exceptional Learners is currently working on a plan to hold transition case conferences virtually or in-person during the month of May and/or during Summer Break.
 
23. How are current student expulsion and expulsion hearings being handled while schools are closed?
If district administration chooses to continue with expulsions that are currently on-hold and student has an IEP, the Manifestation Determination Conference will be held virtually. This will require all case conference committee members to participate and to determine if the behavior was a manifestation of the student’s disability. But at this time, all expulsions are on-hold.
 
24. Will Spring athletics and/or extracurricular activities continue while schools are closed?
All athletics and extracurricular activities held at HSE school facilities are cancelled for the remainder of the school year. In addition, HSE will not be providing or sponsoring any camps, classes or extracurricular activities in the month of June. We remain optimistic that activities can resume after the week of July 4, but that will be determined after questions of personal health and safety are addressed at a later date.
 
25. Will HSE Schools continue to host and/or attend events? 
All HSE School buildings and facilities are closed to the public and will remain closed until further notice, this includes providing or sponsoring any camps, classes or extracurricular activities in the month of June. We remain optimistic that activities can resume after the week of July 4, but an official decision will be determined at a later date.
 
26. Will there be any summer reading programs for elementary students? 
NEW - Hamilton East Public Library will offer its summer reading program virtually. The theme is Imagine Your Story and the program will run from June 1-July 31 for all ages with opportunities to participate in virtual prize drawings. While the library buildings are closed; students can visit the library website here to place a hold for curbside pickup after Memorial Day or download an eBook version.

27. With schools closed indefinitely, will events like Kindergarten Open House and other transition activities for students moving from elementary to intermediate, intermediate to junior high and junior high to high school be rescheduled?
HSE Schools will continue to monitor guidance from state leaders and health officials. A districtwide date for Kindergarten Open House and all school transition activities will be set prior to the start of the 2020-21 school year.
 
28. Is high school prom cancelled? Will there be a make-up prom for students?
Due to the current school closure and shelter in-place mandate, prom has been cancelled for both Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School. There is no plan to reschedule these events for this year.
 
29. State Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCormick recently made a comment regarding flexibility for 2020 graduates. What does that mean for seniors?
All students on track to graduate this spring should participate in their eLearning as assigned. Grades will be given to students for the courses they are currently enrolled in this semester. The flexibility given to seniors from the Indiana Department of Education this year, allows them to graduate as long as they were enrolled in the classes required for graduation as of March 19. However, administration at both high schools, are expecting seniors to attend each day of eLearning and complete all assigned work, which the IDOE has stated is a local decision.
 
30. Will there be a high school graduation? If not, how will students receive their diploma?
NEW - Due to the current COVID-19-related mandates, we will not have a traditional commencement on May 30. Instead, the City of Fishers will be hosting a special Class of 2020 celebration event on Friday, May 29 at 8 p.m. for Fishers High School and Saturday, May 30 at 8 p.m. Location to this event is still TBD. The event will be similar to a drive-in movie concept. Senior families will park their cars, tune in to an FM station, watch a senior video and hear messages from the mayor and the class speaker on large portable screens. After the video, the attendees will be treated to their very own fireworks show.
 
Since the May 30 commencement cannot happen, we have back-up plan to host a traditional commencement ceremony for Hamilton Southeastern on Friday, July 10 at 6 p.m. and  Fishers High School on Saturday, July 11 at 9 a.m. on their respective football fields. This effort will be coordinated with other public agencies including the Fishers Health Department.  Their guidance will help us determine the details of ceremony
 
In addition, personalized yard signs were ordered for all senior graduates to place in their yards. We are trying to do everything we can to celebrate the success of the class of 2020.

31. How do I obtain my student’s school transcript?
To obtain your student’s school transcript, email the Registrar at the high school your student attends. 32. When will the schools be open to allow for students to retrieve their belongings and/or return school library books, textbooks, device rentals, etc.?
NEW - In light of the Governor’s Back on Track plan, schools will incorporate a curbside drop-off strategy to best maintain the safety of our families and staff for the collection of books, rental devices, instruments and other school-owned property. Prinicpals will be communicating with families via Skylert with specific information on dates and times. The collection will take place over the course of two days, between May 26 and June 2.
 
Opportunities to pick-up personal items left in classrooms and lockers will be revisited after the June 30 school closure order has been lifted.

33. My student ordered a yearbook. How and when will those be distributed to students?
Since every HSE school operates slightly differently in the process of ordering yearbooks, school principals will communicate to students and families on the status of their school yearbooks.
 
34. My student typically participates in summer workouts with their team during the summer. Will these workouts be held as usual?
At this time, all HSE Schools facilities are closed through June 30. We will follow the guidance set by the Indiana High School Athletics Association regarding summer workouts/practices for athletics.
 
35. Will online summer school courses be available for high school students, and if so, may they start working on those now? 
For students who have signed-up for online summer school through Indiana Online, there are still plans for this to occur beginning on June 8. Indiana Online has said it does not plan to allow students to begin their courses prior to the published June 8 start date. Indiana Online has not reached a final decision yet on how final exams will be given. The exams may be in-person in July, if it is deemed safe to do so. As an alternative, Indiana Online is investigating giving an its final exam virtually. This information will be updated once a decision has been finalized.
 
36. Will there still be summer school (extended school year, etc.) supports in place for students?
Yes, if Governor Holcomb lifts the statewide ‘Shelter in Place’ mandate and time allows for this to be held during Summer Break.
 
37. I am concerned that my student will not be academically prepared for the next school year. What is HSE Schools doing to ensure all students will be ready to return to the classroom?
For the remainder of this school year, teachers are targeting instruction towards the most essential standards to equip students with the prerequisite skills they will need for the next grade level or course. In the beginning of the next school year, teachers will work to meet students where they are in their learning, fill in any gaps by adjusting curriculum and move students in the direction they need to go in. Teachers will spiral the review of grade level standards through their subjects and courses. It is also important to remember all students across the state and much of the country are facing the same challenges.
 
38. When will class schedules for 2020-21 be released for junior high students?
Incoming seventh and eighth grade students will be able to review their course requests between April 17-24. Students will receive their final schedules via Skyward the week before school starts. Families will be sent a notification when schedules are available to be viewed in Skyward.
 
39. Will Central Office be open for regular business during this closure?
NEW - Central Office will not be open to the public until after June 30. If you need to reach a staff member, click here. If you are in need of help with enrollment, student transfer or other matters, email generalinquiry@hse.k12.in.us.

40. Will School Board meetings continue as planned? Is the public allowed to attend in-person?
The regular scheduled School Board meeting on April 15 and April 29 will be held, but due to the state ‘Shelter in Place’ mandate, the public is not invited to attend in-person. Anyone wishing to speak at that meeting on an agenda item will need to email the School Board President Michelle Fullhart at mfullhart@hse.k12.in.us. The meeting will be livestreamed and can be watched by clicking here. On April 15 and April 29, members of the School Board will abide by the limitations established by the Governor; no more than 10 people in one place with 6-foot distancing. The Board President and the Superintendent will be physically present at the meeting along with the supporting personnel necessary for the livestreaming of the meetings. All additional board members will join the meeting via the Zoom platform. The meeting time for the April 29 board meetings has changed. It will begin at 5 p.m.
 
41. Will there be meal assistance for students while schools are closed?
To ensure students continue to receive healthy meals during this closing, the HSE Food and Nutrition Services team will distribute breakfast and lunch items weekly for students who receive free and reduced school meals. Weekly food distribution will be held on Tuesdays and begin April 14 and end on May 19. Please sign-up here: https://bit.ly/2xFsMk9. Food will be distributed from the College and Career Academy entrances at Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
 
Important: To limit the risk of exposure at the point of distribution, please take a blank piece of paper and write (in large letters with a black marker) the name of one of your HSE students, the school they attend and the number of children you are picking up bags for. Place this paper in your vehicle’s windshield as you go through the pickup line. If you are picking up for another family, write each on a separate piece of paper. Click here for a list of additional  community resources.
 
42. Will I be refunded for canceled field/study trips, school pictures, other school-related purchases?
We are currently working with vendors and locations to secure either refunds and/or new dates to reschedule field/study trips. If you need a refund or have a question about a payment you made, please go to your school homepage and click on the “Refund Request” link. This will take you to a form to email your school’s treasurer.

43. How do I enroll my student for the 2020-21 school year? How do I make a transfer Request or file a Grandfather appeal?
Families who would like to enroll their student(s) or request a transfer and/or Grandfather appeal, can do so online: 44. What if my student needs a work permit?
The Indiana Department of Labor has suspended two requirements of Indiana’s child labor law:
  • For employers to have on file a work permit for minors they employ;
  •  Permission letters from the school allowing minors to work during restricted hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on eLearning days. This action only applies to 16- and 17-year-old students. Those who are 14- and 15-years-old fall under the federal school hours restriction.

45. Will school- and district-sponsored trips be canceled due to concerns of COVID-19?
All travel (school and/or district sponsored) through the summer has been canceled.
 
46. My student was tested for High Ability. How has the school closure impacted the identification for K-6 High Ability programming?

Elementary:
All necessary testing for elementary High Ability services was completed prior to the school closure.
Requisite Scores for both Reading and Math for K-4 are as follows:
Kindergarten: Winter NWEA 99th percentile (or) CogAT 95th percentile (or) SIGS 95th percentile
Grade 1: Winter NWEA 99th percentile
Grade 2: Winter NWEA 95th percentile (or) CogAT 95th percentile (or) SIGS 95th percentile Grade 3: Winter NWEA 95th percentile
Grade 4: Winter NWEA 95th percentile
 
Intermediate and Junior High:
Testing completed prior to the school closure in Reading and Math will be used to determine services.
Requisite scores for both Reading and Math for 5-6 are as follows:
Grade 5: Winter NWEA 95th percentile (or) CogAT 95th percentile (or) SIGS 95th percentile
Grade 6: Winter NWEA 95th percentile
 
Two-year Advanced Math:
Grades 5 - 8: Winter NWEA 97th - 99th percentile AND currently in one-year Advanced Math AND teacher recommendation.
 
Junior High and High School:
Courses will continue to be selected under advisement of school counselors.

47. What is the status of the Panorama surveys for families, teachers, and students that were scheduled between March 23 - April 2?  ​
This year, we will administer a different version of the Panorama Survey that will focus on student, family and teacher experience in the COVID-19 crisis. You will be asked to submit feedback on eLearning, school district support for eLearning, on how you are dealing with the quarantine, etc. The survey will be released on or soon after May 4.
 
48. How do I enroll my student in HSE Schools this summer? Is there a number to call to ask questions?
You may complete the enrollment process online by clicking here. If you need additional assistance, Summer Enrollment will take place at the HSE Schools Central Office (13485 Cumberland Road) beginning on Tuesday, June 23. You will be asked to sign-up for an appointment to come to Central Office and finalize enrollment paperwork for your student. If you have questions may call the Central Office at 317-594-4100 when Central Office personnel return.
 
49. Will the school calendar change for next year? 
At this time, it’s unknown how the school calendar for 2020-21 will be impacted. We will be following the guidance and recommendations of state and health leaders. In the meantime, a committee is being established to begin working on various scenarios of what the start of next school year could be. More information will be released when available.  
 
50. When will Kindergarten Open House be held? How will you help student’s transition from Elementary to Intermediate? Intermediate to Junior High? Junior High to High School?
Dates will be established for these transition activities prior to the start of the 2020-21 school year. Families will be notified of these events no later than June 1 to allow for adequate planning.
 
51. How can my student request class schedule changes for next school year? 
Any students needing to request class schedule changes for next school year, should contact their school counselor for assistance.
 
52. How does my student sign-up for athletics in the fall? 
The respective Athletic Departments will be releasing information to students. The dates for fall athletics have already been established and will remain in place unless otherwise directed by the ISHAA or other state and health leaders.
 
53. Will events that were previously scheduled to take place in the Summer, such as Band Camp, Summer P.E., etc. still be held?
All school facilities and grounds are closed until June 30 per Governor Holcomb’s Executive Order. Any decisions about activities beginning July 1 will be made as more information and guidance becomes available.
 
54. Will summer school P.E. be offered for high school students? If so, will it be held as normal (in-person)?
All students who have registered (and students on the waiting list) for summer P.E. as of April 29, 2020 will be exempt from the "live" P.E. requirement. These students will have the option to either fulfill their two-credit requirement with:
  • Two credits online;
  • A combination of one credit online and another alternatively.
Students desiring to take two credits online will need to do so in the summer or during the school year. Online courses taken during the school year cost $275. Students who have already signed up for two online courses for summer 2020 may add online P.E. as a third course but will do so at their own expense ($275). Additionally, Indiana Online does not allow students to take Physical Education I and II in the same summer. Students may still opt to take one or both credits live but would need to do this during the school year or next summer.
 
For students who planned to use a spring activity as an alternative credit for one of their two P.E. credits, they must meet the following requirement:
  • The student must have been actively engaged in their respective activity at the time of school closure to be able to receive credit for this activity.
Alternative P.E. directors at both high schools will work with students to gain the required documentation.
 

55. When will year-end grades be released?
NEW - Final grades for students will be posted on Monday, June 1 for elementary, intermediate and junior high students. Grades for high school students will be released on Tuesday, June 2.
