High School Cheerleading Teams are Pushing to be the Best

October 04, 2019

Attending the football games this Friday are the Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School cheerleading teams. Yet they not only cheer for their school at football games. Both teams also cheer competitively, for which they choreograph their own routines and practice 3 to 4 times a week.

On the mats, both teams are high-achieving and fast-paced. “It’s top notch, it’s super competitive,” says HSE cheerleading coach and Hamilton Southeastern alumni Ally Stein.  The Hamilton Southeastern cheerleading team has 9 state titles, the Fishers cheerleading team has 5 state titles and one UCA National Cheerleading Championship title, and neither team intends to back down in the coming years. “Their naturally competitive mindset pushes them to keep up with their skills and train new ones.” says Fishers High School coach Danielle Thompson. Both teams will compete in the Varsity A division for the state championship in November and advance to the national championship, which takes place in early 2020.

Although cheerleading takes a significant amount of individual attention and practice, especially with an individual’s stunts and tumbles, it also requires a group mindset. Cheerleaders must be willing to trust each other to hold them up – quite literally. The bonds between members on a team create a family, and the coaches aim to make their teams a safe space where cheerleaders can relieve stress and work hard to be their best selves. “You have to trust someone to catch you from 20 feet in the air and you have to allow someone to count on you to be there to catch them,” says Thompson. In addition to the personal bonds created through the sport, cheerleading enforces the practice of skills such as time management and dedication to one’s craft that are invaluable in day-to-day life.
