HSE Schools’ Food Drive Sets New Record

October 01, 2018

FISHERS, IN: Boxes of spaghetti, rigatoni, ziti and fettuccini could be found in every building across Hamilton Southeastern Schools in the week leading up to the annual Mudsock Football game.
“PastaBowl provides students with an opportunity to give back by donating pasta at their school and helping stock the shelves of Fishers-area food banks, while raising awareness about food insecurities,” said long-time organizer and HSE School Board member John DeLucia. “We are thrilled that HSE Schools combined to set a new record donation this year.”
In total, the 21 schools collected 20,152 pounds of pasta. This is a new PastaBowl record and an increase of more than 6,000 pounds from 2017.
Organizers were thrilled to see the increase of donations as it is estimated that one in seven HSE students struggle with hunger. As important as the food donations, PastaBowl also raises awareness for the 3,000 local children struggling with food insecurities. Officials say pasta is a core staple for local food banks and comes at an essential time during the pre-holiday months when donations are often low.
According to Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation Executive Director Justin Hirnisey, Meijer once again supported this year’s PastaBowl as the title sponsor of the effort and kept the store shelves stocked with pasta in the weeks leading up to the donation. “We are very appreciative of Meijer’s annual support of HSSF and PastaBowl that happens in conjunction with the Mudsock Football game.”
Will students break the record next year? Organizers say that’s to be determined, but a food drive of this magnitude is not possible without an army of volunteers, donors and supporters that included Meijer, ProShred, Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank, Citizens State Bank, HSSF and all 21 HSE Schools.
