New Art Shows Diverse Student Body at SCE

January 22, 2019

FISHERS, IN: Take a walk around Sand Creek Elementary School and you may notice some new, colorful pictures hanging from the walls. The pictures depict current students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, and were hung after a simple question from a second grade student.

A student named Annabell in Kayla Rago's class asked one day “why do we have these pictures at our school?” She was referring to the current images that were displayed, most of Norman Rockwell's work that did not represent all the remarkable learners at Sand Creek Elementary.

According to Rago, her class then wanted to write a letter to Principal Peter English about the problem they had noticed with the pictures in the school. English received the students' letter and met with the class. He offered to give them funding to help replace the current artwork with suitable pictures of the school.

Rago says she then asked for help on the school's Facebook page and found a parent and local photographer willing to donate her skills. Kelly Carmen walked around SCE and took pictures of various students in class as they worked. Carmen shot dozen of images and the class picked out their top 30 pictures of what they felt best represented their school and community.
