Students in We the Change research and plan for service projects
"We are the Change"

September 23, 2019

When students at Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate and Junior High began asking about opportunities to get involved with their community, their vision brought about student-run club We the Change (WTC). By initiating a cultural shift from the inside out, WTC is building a streamline process of students who are working to improve their community, empower others, and celebrate diversity at school.
One major foundation for WTC is the goal for students to learn how to be the solution, taking action to produce positive change before they ask for permission. “I want to empower student voice even more to create kind of a bridge for students who are ready for that environment,” says Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate and Junior High Dean Brice Willey, the club sponsor.

WTC connects various people from different backgrounds, creating a climate where anyone can get informed and anyone can belong. To do this, students in WTC share their stories and use their voices to encourage others. “This club is all about opportunities to shine and making your voice be heard,” explained student Alaina Mason. Additionally, WTC aims to impact their community through service, which gives students an opportunity to lead by example. “I think by providing this service,” says student Macie Ruth, “we are affecting the culture.” Intermediate and Junior High schoolers in WTC have the opportunity to see how their actions impact those around them and to understand what it means to be confident in one’s identity.

One of WTC’s opportunities to impact others is the Equity Café, which will be hosted for the first time in the 2019-2020 school year at Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate and Junior High on September 23rd at 7 PM. The Equity Café is an open space that gives Hamilton Southeastern students and families a chance to attend and to learn what it means to create and thrive in an inclusive, successful environment.
