Frequently Asked Questions

When will school boundary changes go into effect?
The new school boundaries will go into effect the first day of the 2019-2020 School Year.
Will I get a chance to participate in the redistricting process?
Yes, this is a “Community Driven, Board Decision” redistricting process. There is an online survey you may fill out and share your reactions on the proposed redistricting plans. The survey will close on November 2. There are two public meetings scheduled as well:

  • Oct. 24 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Fishers High School CCA Cafeteria

  • Oct. 25 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Hamilton Southeastern High School CCA Cafeteria

Will there be an opportunity for me to vote on an option?
Options are being explored and examined for characteristics that will drive the final recommendation toward the goals redistricting established by the School Board.  There will be no vote on various options.

What are the goals for redistricting?
To the greatest extent possible, redistricting will accomplish the following:

  • Assign students to schools closest to their homes.

  • Attempt to design a “feeder” pattern.

  • Maintain neighborhoods and subdivisions.

  • Consider stability of programs for Exceptional Learners instructional learning spaces.

  • Provide capacity at schools with the greatest potential for growth.

  • Reduce the number of portables in the school district.

  • Examine the continuation of choice as an option at the high school level.

Are we using a consultant to help with the redistricting process?
Yes, Cooperative Strategies, the same firm that guided us through the previous redistricting, has designed the process we are using to produce this redistricting plan.
Why do we have to go through redistricting again?
The primary reason for redistricting is the opening of Southeastern Elementary School in fall 2019. However, HSE continues to grow and the population continues to shift from the west to east. With the 2016 referendum, we were able to add teachers, reducing the pupil-to-teacher ratios in our classrooms. This necessitated the addition of portable units. The redistricting will reduce the number of portables in use.
Which grade levels will be affected by the redistricting?
The focus is on kindergarten through eighth grade.
What is the timeline for the redistricting process?
The Superintendent will make a recommendation in November, and the School Board will vote on it in December.
Who has the final say on redistricting?
The School Board will vote on the final redistricting plan.
What happens to students affected by redistricting?
Principals are making plans to ensure that every child in the school district will feel welcome in his or her new building. All of our schools are world-class, with highly professional staff. We will make sure that the transition for our students will be as seamless as possible.
